03/02/2010 - Atlanta, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Veteran defenseman Chris Chelios is returning to the National Hockey League, signing a contract Tuesday to play for the Atlanta Thrashers.

Chelios was an unrestricted free agent and recently inked a third professional tryout contract with the Chicago Wolves, Atlanta's American Hockey League affiliate. He appeared in 48 games for the Wolves this season, ranking second in the league with a plus-35 rating while recording five goals and 21 points.

The 48-year-old last played in the NHL during the 2008-09 season for Detroit and will be taking part in his 26th NHL season.

Chelios is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, a three-time Norris Trophy winner as the league's top backliner and has been selected to the All-Star Game 11 times. The ageless vet has skated in an NHL-record 266 playoff games, collecting 31 goals and 113 assists over that span with Cup wins coming in 1986 with Montreal and twice with Detroit in 2002 and 2008.

Internationally, he has played for USA Hockey four times in the Olympics (1984, 1998, 2002, 2006), earning a silver medal in 2002.

A native of Chicago, Chelios was plucked in the second round by Montreal in the 1981 draft. He spent two seasons with college hockey powerhouse Wisconsin and made his NHL debut with the Canadiens late in the 1983-84 season.

Chelios ranks fourth all-time in games played with 1,644 and has amassed 185 goals and 763 assists with 2,891 penalty minutes for the Canadiens, Blackhawks and Red Wings.
